St Paul's Eye Appeal logo.St Paul's Eye Appeal is run by the Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness. The Foundation is a registered charity established in 1991 with the objective of reducing disability from eye disease. To achieve this aim we support the research work of both the clinicians in St Paul's Eye Unit, Liverpool and of the vision scientists in the Unit of Ophthalmology, University of Liverpool.

Either directly or indirectly we can all be affected by the loss of sight. For some it can be minor but for others it can be more severe causing problems in our everyday life.

Montage of ophthalmology-related images. At least three quarters of a million people are registered blind or partially sighted in the UK, although estimates of blind and partially sighted people are always low because the registration system is not compulsory.

Visual difficulties can affect a person's quality of life in many ways, such as recognising people, difficulty in reading or driving. A loss of confidence caused by a fear of falling may even restrict mobility around a person's home. More often than not it comes at a time when we should be enjoying retirement and old age.

St Paul's has been recognised as the leading eye hospital for Liverpool since the early 1900s and more recently as one of the most progressive in the UK. Its reputation continues to grow for its caring approach to patients by its specialist nurses and doctors. In addition it is now renowned throughout the world as a hospital researching innovative new treatments for eye diseases.

Lord Derby opening our Clinical Eye Research Centre in October 2004.Based in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, St Paul's consists of a 24-bedded in-patient ward, a day case and pre-operative assessment unit, 4 dedicated ophthalmic theatres, an out-patient department and primary care walk-in Centre and a new purpose built clinical eye research centre.

St Paul's treats around 90,000 people each year from all over the UK and further afield.

The Unit of Ophthalmology was opened in the University of Liverpool in 1993. With over 20 scientists and a suite of research laboratories the Unit has quickly become one of the key centres in the UK for medical research into eye threatening diseases. Its world-renowned research programmes are led by 5 professors, a number unprecedented in the UK outside of London. The Unit's peer-reviewed scientific publications continue to be cited by and influence other scientists world wide.

The formation of the Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness has been the catalyst to even greater enthusiasm and progress within both St Paul's and the Unit of Ophthalmology, uniting the work of their clinicians and academics. With your support we will be able to continue our work into reducing the number of people who are devastated by the loss of sight whilst searching for new treatments to help those already affected.
