Christmas 2006 was one to remember for our St Paul's Eye Appeal thanks to a £3,000 gift from safe working Shell employees and contractors at Shell's Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port.

St Paul's Eye Unit was one of eight beneficiaries, receiving a £3,000 cash donation from Shell's Save 'n' Score scheme, a site-wide initiative which provides charity cash incentives for employees to work safely.

The aim of the Save 'n' Score scheme is simple but effective. Shell employees and contractors nominate a charity and choose a target donation figure. The company then makes monthly monetary sums available which accumulate towards the target in line with safety performance. The more safely people work, the quicker the charitable target is reached.

A further £7,000 was donated equally between the remaining seven local causes:

  • Ellesmere Port Aquadis - a disabled swimming and dinghy sailing club
  • Our Lady's Primary School, Ellesmere Port
  • The Ark - a Group which provides help to the homeless in Birkenhead
  • 2nd Birkenhead Scouts
  • British International Sailors Society - a Group which helps to improve the lives of visiting foreign seafarers on the River Mersey
  • Hooton Air Training Corps
  • Leighton Hospital Special Baby Care Unit, Crewe.

Stanlow's site manager Ken Rivers, pictured, held a special presentation ceremony at the Stanlow site where he handed over the charity cheques. Mr Rivers commented:

"The safety message at the refinery is very simple - be safe and help others to be safe. The better the performance, the more money is available to be donated to good causes.

This year the Company has donated a record £40,000 to sixteen local charities and I congratulate our employees and contractors on this achievement."
