The Liverpool & District Association of Women's Clubs used their annual sponsored walk around Croxteth Country Park, Liverpool, on Sunday 9th April 2006 to help raise awareness of sight threatening diseases and raise essential funds for St Paul's Eye Appeal. The Association has 20 clubs in the Merseyside and Widnes area generated enough support from the local community to raise in excess of £2,000. The money raised will help our Appeal to carry out new research programmes to prevent people losing their sight from diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Amongst the Association's members and their families and friends was 90-year old Alice Drucker, who has taken part in every one of the annual walks. The Association voted to support St Paul's as their charity of the year following a talk given by Variety legend Mavis Whyte - ENSA's 'Tiddlywinky' and star of Jackson Earle's 'Melody Inn Review'. Ms Whyte has lost her sight to AMD. The walk started at 11am in the car park and participants were invited to walk as far as they are able around the park for up to 5 miles. Betty Meakin, Association Secretary said:
